Tobacco in the Environment

April 2, 2009

by Marlow Groves

You may know about some of the negative effects smoking can have on ones body but have you even considered what smoking cigarettes can do to the environment? Tobacco and the environment is a huge issue on our planet today.

Did you know that cigarettes are the most polluted item on the earth and 4.5 trillion are littered annually. An estimated 4.5 TRILLION! Not only is that a huge number of garbage but the butts never completely biodegrade. Instead, they become tiny filter particles and clog up our ecosystems. I myself am a huge environmentalist and knowing this kind of information breaks my heart.

Even if you personally don’t smoke, the smoking from other people is costing YOU money. The litter that cigarettes and tobacco products produce costs taxpayers (that’s you) billions of dollars each year.

Our environment is one of the most important things to look after and with tobacco products being a big contribution to the pollution problem I think we should be confronting the tobacco industry and trying to be the change today. Plastics from cigarette filters remain in the environment for very long periods of time. These plastics can be found in... [More]

Product Placement

March 18, 2009

We’ve all seen it and whether we are conscious of it or not it’s there. The thing is if you don’t see it (like if you can’t pick it out or if it seems normal) then it’s being very effective.

I’m talking about product placement also known as embedded marketing. This kind of advertisement includes, placing branded goods in a context usually devoid of ads such as movies, the storyline of television shows or news programs.

Oh and by the way 2/3 of advertisers employ product placement about 80% of the time in commercial TV programming.

It’s something Big Tobacco Industries caught on to a long time ago. The relationship between Hollywood stars and the Tobacco Industry goes back decades and it has proven effective.

For your information, smoking in movies has doubled over the last 10 years and non-smoking teens whose favourite stars frequently smoke on screen are 16 times more likely to have positive attitudes about smoking in...

Tobacco Free Sports

March 12, 2009

by Josh McCready

I don't see why people have a problem with Tobacco Free Sports; the whole point of recreational activities is to be active. When you smoke you are not helping your body, you are hurting it. Tobacco products decrease athletic performance and endurance so instead of helping your game, your hurting it. If you are a spectator and you are thinking "I don't care I'm not an athlete it does not effect me". Think again, when spectators smoke, the athletes around will be affected by the second hand smoke. So even though they might not smoke, they can not do anything about the others that are smoking around them. That's why I think this is one of the best initiatives that people are talking about. I don't get why it has took so long for people to speak up against this, because it is your health and why would you let what others around you do affect your health? I can speak for myself, as I am a soccer player, I do not like when others smoke when I am playing sports. Like some places, every place should have a by-law that restricts smoking within a certain distance...
